 Ocular Refraction > Astigmatism

The function of the cornea (front surface of the eye) is to refract light into the eye. However, it is usually not as spherical as a football & this results in an unequal bending of light rays entering the eyes.

Many people have a small amount of astigmatism, & for most people, this has very little effect on their vision. However, high degrees of astigmatism can cause blurred vision for both far & near objects. Common complaints are headaches, distortion & tilting of images depending on its severity.

This refractive condition can occur together with myopia & other refractive conditions. It can also be corrected using spectacles, but special toric contact lenses may be required.
